021-Furniture Hazards: Bamboo Pests
1. Bamboo Pests Appearance Notes
General Appearance: These are typically tiny, cylindrical beetles, usually dark brown or black in color. A distinguishing feature is their hood-like thorax that almost completely covers the head when viewed from above.
Primary Evidence: Common indicators include circular exit holes and the accumulation of very fine, powder-like frass on the surface of bamboo materials.
2. Bamboo Pests Top 3 Food Preferences
Note: Bamboo pests are highly selective, targeting specific components within woody and fibrous materials.
- High-Starch Bamboo Fibers - They target species with high starch and sugar content, which are essential for larval nutrition.
- Dried Rattan & Cane - They frequently infest woven furniture and decorative items made from natural fibrous plants.
- Seasoned Softwoods - Some species can transition to other seasoned woods if the starch content is sufficient for survival.
3. Infestation Identification
- Perfect Round Holes: Clean exit holes, approximately 1-2mm in diameter, appearing on the bamboo surface.
- Fine Frass: Presence of flour-like dust piles directly beneath the material.
- Structural Weakness: Over time, the internal feeding can cause the bamboo to become brittle and lose its weight-bearing capacity.
